Flow cytometry

In order to study microalgal and bacterial cells in the water column and the sediment, we use a NovoCyte 2060R Flow Cytometer coupled with a NovoSampler Pro NS200 autosampler.

The cytometer allows you to accurately study the number and characteristics of the cells in different samples, a crucial aspect in monitoring the quality of marine and freshwater ecosystems. With the cytometer, we can study the abundance of the major microbial groups based on size and pigment content (pico and nanophytoplankton and bacterioplankton) and their cellular characteristics diversity (size, shape, nucleic acid content etc). This can provide valuable information on the effects of environmental conditions and the distribution of microorganisms.

Technical Features
The NovoCyte 2060R features a two-laser configuration (blue and red) operating at wavelengths of 488 nm and 640 nm, respectively. This system enables the detection of up to 6 channels of fluorescence, providing high-resolution data for the identification and quantification of diverse cell populations in a sample. The autosampler allows to measure up to 96 samples in a microplate reader. The data are then analysed with the NovoExpress V1.5.0 software.
